The intent of the Law Enforcement Explorers Program is to educate and involve youth in police operations, interest them in possible law enforcement careers, but above all, teach them life skills to arm them for whatever they choose to do. Youth ages 14 to 20 apply for the program, which includes weekly training classes in first aid, crime scene techniques, and traffic control. They also receive lessons in team building, communications skills, responsibility and respect. There are no participation fees for Explorers, and they are not paid for their volunteer time. In 2012, 22 Explorers performed 4,329 service hours. The value of their volunteer time is worth $78,745.
